Abstract

This research explores how Taylor Swift uses figurative language in her album Folklore, focusing specifically on the love triangle story told through the songs “Cardigan,” “August,” and “Betty.” By analyzing these songs, this study identifies and explains the types of figurative language like metaphors, similes, personification, and symbolism, etc. that Taylor Swift uses to convey complex emotions like unreturned love, regret, yearning, and healing. Each song offers a different perspective on the love triangle, helping listeners understand each character’s feelings. The analysis shows that Swift’s use of figurative language adds depth to the story by creating vivid imagery and layered meaning, making the emotional landscape more relatable and meaningful for listeners. This study highlights how figurative language can be a powerful tool in popular music for creating and deepening themes, encouraging future studies on narrative techniques in modern songwriting.
