This research is motivated by the rampant phenomenon of verbal bullying on social media, one of which is the Instagram account @rara_cahayatarotindigo, which often becomes the target of belittling, mocking, and even personal attacks.The purpose of this research is to describe the forms of verbal bullying received by the account and to analyze the factors that cause the bullying to occur using the components of Dell Hymes' ethnographic communication analysis, namely participant, ends, act sequence, and norms.The issues raised in this research encompass two main aspects: (a) the forms of verbal bullying found in the comment section of the Instagram account @rara_cahayatarotindigo, and (b) the speech factors that trigger bullying based on Hymes' theory.
The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis techniques.Data in the form of netizens' comments containing elements of verbal bullying were collected from specific posts on the Instagram account @rara_cahayatarotindigo over a certain period.The researcher used documentation and non-participatory observation techniques in data collection, and analyzed it based on Dell Hymes' communication ethnography framework to uncover the linguistic and social factors underlying the bullying actions.The data analysis technique was carried out by (1) analyzing the identified data based on aspects of form and factors of verbal bullying, (2) describing the results of the data analysis, (3) interpreting the obtained data.
The research results show that the dominant forms of verbal bullying include insults about appearance, professional harassment, the use of harsh words, and sarcasm towards the source's spiritual beliefs.From the analysis of Dell Hymes' speech components, it was found that participants (speakers who feel they have moral or social authority), ends (the goal of mocking or humiliating), act sequence (the structured sequence of utterances as mockery), and norms (the culture of free communication on social media without ethical control) are the dominant factors driving the occurrence of verbal bullying.This research is expected to contribute to linguistic and social studies in the digital realm, as well as provide input for the development of more ethical digital literacy.
Based on the results of the data analysis, the conclusions are as follows: (1) forms of verbal bullying on the Instagram account @rara_cahayatarotindigo (sarcasm, criticism, insults); (2) factors of verbal bullying on the Instagram account @rara_cahayatarotindigo (participants, ends, act sequence, norms).
