Abstract
This research is a qualitative descriptive research with a qualitative approach. This research aims to describe the level of students' understanding based on the APOS theory (Action, Process, Object, Scheme) in class VII SMPN Padang. The research was researched based on the APOS theory by analyzing the concept of students' understanding in solving problems based on the stages in the research. APOS theory consists of 4 stages, namely 1) Action is the initial stage in analyzing the problem, 2) process is the steps in solving the problem, 3) object is the target in solving the problem 4) scheme ( schema) is a combination of actions, processes and objects that have been carried out. The subjects to be researched are class VII students at SMPN 1 Padang using APOS theory with Algebra material. Data collection is done by giving tests containing problems with the APOS theory stages to students, then conducting interviews with students. Research data analysis was examined using the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and data verification.
