Abstract
Background: The quality of sleep among medical students was important because it could affect students' academic performance. Insufficient sleep affected alertness and caused a decrease in attention, which slowed down cognitive processes. Furthermore, lack of sleep disrupted the functions of the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, which affected memory, language, creativity, logical and critical reasoning. Research showed that 95.8% of medical students had smartphones for academic purposes, and about 84% of medical students believed that mobile health applications were very useful for learning, information search, and academic performance. Smartphone use could disturb sleep because blue light exposure could suppress melatonin hormone. Using smartphones for more than two hours before sleep resulted in poor sleep quality.
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of smartphone usage duration on the sleep quality of students from the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang..
Method: This was a quantitative study, conducted by surveying pre-clinical students from the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang from the 2021 and 2022 cohorts regarding the impact of smartphone usage duration on sleep quality using a cross-sectional method and direct observation. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire in the form of Google Forms. .
Result: The Chi-Square test showed a p-value of 0.010 (P<0.05), which concluded that there was a significant effect between smartphone usage duration and sleep quality among students.
Conclusion: Smartphone usage duration influenced the sleep quality of students from the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang from the 2021 and 2022 cohorts. The majority of students from the 2021 and 2022 cohorts used smartphones for more than 6 hours per day, with 67.9% respondents and 75% respondents reported having poor sleep quality.
