Abstract

Traffic congestion is an increasingly prevalent issue in many urban areas, particularly on main roads with limited dimensions. This research aims to redesign the geometry of a road measuring only 2 x 3 meters, which has been shown to exacerbate congestion in that segment. By redesigning the road geometry, it is hoped that traffic congestion can be reduced and the flow of traffic improved. In this project, the design of flexible pavement is carried out using two methods: the AASTHO 1993 method and the BINA MARGA 1987 method. The selection of flexible pavement is based on its elastic properties, which effectively bear loads, thereby enhancing user comfort on the road. Additionally, the materials used are more economical, and flexible pavement with asphalt binder can produce a waterproof road surface, which is crucial for preventing water accumulation on the road.
Optimal drainage channel planning is also a focus of this research, given the high volume of vehicles passing through the area. With proper planning, it is expected to reduce damage caused by heavy vehicle loads and improve the road’s durability. This research aims to make a significant contribution to the planning and management of road infrastructure in urban areas and serve as a reference for future studies in traffic engineering and road pavement. Through a systematic and analytical approach, this research not only focuses on technical aspects but also considers social and economic factors that influence traffic congestion. Thus, the result of this study are expected to provide comprehensive and sustainable solutions to the problem of congestion on main roads.
