Abstract

The increasingly competitive job market requires fresh graduates to develop effective adaptation strategies to successfully transition into the professional world. This study aims to explore the adaptation strategies employed by fresh graduates in facing the challenges of entering the workforce, with a focus on the city of Malang, known as a center for higher education in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The subjects were selected through purposive sampling, with criteria including graduates from universities in Malang who completed their studies between 2023 and 2025 and are currently employed or actively seeking employment. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, with data validity ensured through source triangulation. The findings indicate that fresh graduates in Malang adopt various adaptation strategies, such as improving skills through training and certifications, building professional networks, utilizing digital job-search platforms, and strengthening mental readiness through social support and organizational experiences during college. Through the lens of Talcott Parsons' AGIL framework, these strategies reflect efforts by fresh graduates to fulfill the functions of adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and latency. This study emphasizes the importance of holistic job readiness, which includes technical competence, soft skills, and the mental resilience needed to navigate the dynamic labor market.
