Abstract
This thesis examines the significance of conversation-based English learning for vocational high school students, especially those who are involved in the tourism sector. This research was conducted at the hotel in Batu and a five-star hotel in Yogyakarta with students who were undergoing internships and had experience participating in conversation-based English learning during their internships. This study used a qualitative research design, using semi-structured interviews and observation to collect data. The findings show that this method significantly improved students’ speaking and listening skills, as well as their confidence in real communication scenarios. This study reveals the challenges and benefits of this approach. Students highlighted that conversation-based learning significantly improved their speaking and listening skills and their confidence in handling communication scenarios. They appreciated the practical and interactive nature of the method, which allowed them to introduce industry-relevant communication skills, such as role-playing and simulations. This study highlights that conversation-based English learning is an effective method and strategy to prepare students with the skills needed to succeed in the tourism industry. This improves language skills and prepares students to meet the challenges of future global careers. Furthermore, students expressed a strong preference for conversation-based English learning over traditional instruction, noting that they felt more motivated, engaged, and capable of handling international guests. Overall, conversation-based English instruction proved to be an effective, engaging, and meaningful approach for vocational language education.
