Abstract

Anime as a part of popular culture has a great influence in shaping people's perceptions on various issues, including international politics. One Piece, one of the most popular anime, explicitly displays themes such as hegemony of power, corruption, resistance to authority, and human rights. This research analyzes how International Relations students in Malang understand these issues through One Piece. Using quantitative and qualitative mixed methods, data was collected through questionnaires to 50 students and in-depth interviews with 10 selected respondents. The results show that the majority of students see One Piece as an effective medium in representing global political dynamics in an interesting and easy-to-understand manner. The World Government in this anime is considered to reflect the dominance of global powers, while pirates are portrayed as a symbol of resistance against injustice, which is relevant to various real social movements. However, students' perceptions of the political messages in these anime vary depending on their academic backgrounds and personal experiences. This study shows that anime can be an effective educational tool in understanding international politics, offering an alternative perspective for students in studying global dynamics through popular culture.
