Abstract
This study examines the pattern of communication between father and son in the context of migrant worker families in Sumbersih Hamlet, Kedungsalam Village, Donomulyo District, Malang Regency. In the past, fathers were seen as the most powerful patriarch in the family, but that role has shifted as the number of mothers working as migrant workers increases. The phenomenon of housewives is becoming increasingly common, with fathers taking on the role of primary caregivers at home to focus more on raising their children.
This study aims to identify and analyze the communication patterns that occur between fathers and children in migrant worker families, using descriptive qualitative methods with data collection through unstructured interviews and documentation.
The results of the study identified five main communication patterns applied in migrant worker families: direct communication, one-way communication, two-way communication, asynchronous communication, and synchronous communication. Each family shows a different preference in the use of these communication patterns, influenced by various factors such as busy work, time zone differences, and family relationship dynamics. Mr. MS is more dominant in using direct and two-way communication that results in a strong relationship with his child, Mr. AS relies more on synchronous communication through video calls to maintain emotional connection, while Mr. BW uses more asynchronous communication through messaging applications due to time limitations and time zone differences.
The study concludes that the success of communication in migrant worker families depends not only on the availability of communication technology, but also on the ability of families to adapt and integrate various communication methods into their routines effectively. Each communication pattern has its own advantages and challenges, and the success of family communication is more determined by how family members can utilize the various communication methods available to maintain strong and harmonious relationships. This research provides important insights into how migrant worker families can maintain family bonds through effective communication, even when physically distanced.
