Abstract

This study aims to describe the communication competence of parents with children regarding gadget use and identify the obstacles they face in this communication. The theories used are Judee Burgoon's Interpersonal Communication Theory and McLeod and Chaffee's Family Communication Theory.

This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The informants in this study were parents who have children aged 6-7 years at SDN 2 Mulyoagung, Dau District, Malang Regency, East Java. The data collection technique in this study was carried out through in-depth interviews with five parents and children. The data analysis techniques used include data reduction and data verification or drawing conclusions.

The results of the study showed that most children use gadgets owned by parents with varying supervision. Some parents are able to direct their use effectively, while others still have difficulty controlling their children's habits. The main obstacles that arise are a lack of understanding of the impact of technology, difficulty in diverting children's attention, and lack of consistency in making rules makes it difficult for children to understand and follow the rules set, including in the use of gadgets.

In conclusion, in supervising children's gadget use, parents need to have three main competencies: supervising, directing, and controlling. So that children can use gadgets healthily. Parents also need to implement more open communication, set clear rules, and improve their understanding of technology.
