Abstract
This study examines the use of satirical figures of speech in the roasting of Indonesian ministers by Kiky Saputri. Roasting is a form of critique in comedy that is delivered humorously while still conveying sharp messages. In linguistics, satirical figures of speech serve as a means of communication that can express social criticism indirectly, making them an interesting subject of analysis. This study aims to identify the forms, meanings, and functions of satirical figures of speech used by Kiky Saputri in roasting ministers.
This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a pragmatic approach. The data were obtained through documentation techniques by analyzing Kiky Saputri's roasting videos uploaded on YouTube. Data collection was carried out using the observation and note-taking method, while data analysis involved classifying satirical figures of speech based on Gorys Keraf’s theory and interpreting their meanings and functions in social and political contexts.
The results show that Kiky Saputri uses several types of satirical figures of speech in her roasting of ministers, including irony, satire, and sarcasm. Irony is used to subtly and implicitly convey criticism, while satire highlights social inequalities with clever humor, and sarcasm is employed to criticize in a sharp and direct manner. The discussion reveals that the use of these satirical figures of speech is not merely for entertainment but also serves as a tool for social critique, reflecting public opinion on government policies or actions.
In conclusion, the use of satirical figures of speech in Kiky Saputri’s roasting functions as an entertaining yet socially critical medium. Through her linguistic style, Kiky successfully captures public attention on current issues without directly offending, making her critique more easily accepted by audiences. This study is expected to contribute to linguistic research, particularly in understanding the role of language as a tool for communication in social criticism and popular culture.
