Abstract

Seblang Olehsari Dance is a sacred tradition that has been passed down through generations by the people of Banyuwangi, particularly in the village of Olehsari. As part of a ritual to honor ancestors and maintain the balance between humans and nature, this tradition holds deep spiritual values. However, as it has been adapted into a festival performance by the Banyuwangi government, the primary impression it conveys has shifted from being simple, modest, and authentic to more of an entertainment showcase for festival purposes. Despite this, the tradition continues to be performed in its original form without altering the ritual practices that define Seblang Olehsari.

This study aims to design a journalistic photography work in the form of a photobook to present a profound visual perspective on the Seblang Olehsari tradition. The design process implements the EDFAT method to produce storytelling images that accurately depict real conditions in the field. This work seeks to capture the ritual process, not only highlighting its visual beauty but also revealing the sacred meanings behind each movement and procession. This research explores how the Seblang tradition is preserved in its original form despite being presented in a festival setting and how the people of Olehsari strive to maintain traditional practices without altering their essence. This photobook serves not only as a medium for visual documentation but also as a means to celebrate and preserve the sacredness of the Seblang Olehsari tradition as an invaluable cultural heritage.
