Abstract

This study examines Anne with E, a series by Moira Walley-Beckett adapted from the novel Anne of Green Gables (1908) by Lucy Maud Montgomery, which highlights the issue of liberal feminism through its narrative, dialogue, setting, wardrobe, and gestures. The study aims to analyze the meaning of liberal feminism in Anne with E Season 3 using a qualitative approach and an interpretative paradigm. Data was collected through documentation and analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic techniques to identify the meaning of liberal feminism. The analysis was conducted at the denotative, connotative, and mythological levels. The findings show that at the denotative level, the series reflects 19th-century life and gender inequality through the main character's development. At the connotative level, the protagonist symbolizes resistance against social norms that restrict women. Meanwhile, at the mythological level, gender inequality is portrayed as something natural, which can only be changed by courageous individuals who challenge societal norms. In conclusion, Anne with E Season 3 conveys the meaning of liberal feminism through its narrative elements, highlighting gender inequality in 19th-century society. The semiotic analysis reveals that the main character serves as a symbol of resistance against restrictive social norms. While gender inequality is depicted as a natural condition, it can be challenged by individuals who dare to oppose oppressive norms. Thus, the series delivers a message about women's struggle for equality and justice.
