Abstract

Adolescent suicide is a very sensitive issue, where the media has an important role in shaping public perception through news. This study aims to explore the tendency of news content in the Kompas.com media regarding adolescent suicide news by using the framing analysis method of Zhongdang Pan & Gerald M. Kosicki. This study uses a qualitative approach to identify how Kompas.com frame the issue of suicide, especially through syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical structures. The results showed that kompas.com tended to use sensational framing, focusing on the tragic details of suicides, such as how the victim ended his or her life and the emsocionic aspects of news narratives. This can strengthen the public's view of mental health issues, making suicide more seen as a tragedy of a social problem that requires serious treatment. This kind of news also risks exacerbating the stigma against individuals who experience similar problems, and potentially ignoring the importance of education related to suicide prevention. Therefore, the media needs to consider the impact of this kind of news to emphasize more on the delivery of educational information, prevention, and support for adolescent mental health.
