Abstract

The research was designed to find out 1) the method used by the teacher in teaching writing. 2) the way the teacher implemented the teaching method, 3) the advantages and disadvantages of those methods used by the teacher.
In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative to analyze the data. The subject of this research is one of the English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Batu. The instruments of this research are observation and interview.
The result of this study shows that the teacher implemented PPP (presentation, practice and production) and task based learning method in teaching writing. The implementations of the method are 1) in PPP, Teacher presented the materials to the students until the students understand with the material. Then, students practice the materials that teacher have explained. In the production step, students got the task from teacher to practice the materials that had been learned before. She asked the students to work in group. 2) In task based learning, students were having task from the teacher. Students should answer the teacher's question one by one about asking and giving opinion. Students individually wrote their answer on white board as brainstorming, student red or listen the example that gave by the teacher as pre-task. After the students having pre task on the white board, students given a task preparation from the teacher in pair. Each pair comes forward to the class to present their task and the teacher scoring them from their performance. Furthermore, there were advantages and disadvantages of using methods. The students have good cooperation when they worked in group. Students that had weakness in writing can acquire from their other friends who had a good writing. In addition, there was good interaction among students. Moreover, there were several students who did not active in group when they worked in group.
