COMMISSIVE SPEECH ACT USED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON MOVIE

Students might have no difficulties in understanding commissive speech act in theory, but in real life practical, it is the opposite. Students require better knowledge to make it work. Media that has audio and visual such as movie could be a good media to make students’ understanding balanced in both theory and practical. This study aimed to see what are commissive speech acts used by the main character in movie entitled Raya and the Last Dragon. Commissive is one of specific type in speech act. The type of research used in this study was qualitative research. This study used Raya and the Last Dragon movie as a research object. The data were collected from movie script and analyzed based on Yule’s theory. The researcher found 3 out of 4 types of commissive. Those data consists 5 data of promising, 3 data of threatening, and 11 data of refusing utterances. The result has 19 data in total. The dominant one is the act of refusal, which was appeared 11 times. It is quite obvious that the main character is cautious and considerable, that others could not make the main character agree or accept their request so easily, even though the things went hard. It is hoped that this study can be considered as good opportunity to teach or learn particular topic in more detail, especially commissive speech act, knowing that the learning media used in this study provides audio and visual along with the scenes. Thus, students could uderstand commissives speech act better, both theory and practically.
