Abstract

Dental and oral diseases are diseases that are common in society and occur in all age groups. In the age group of 11-14 years who experience the tooth phase of changing from primary teeth to permanent teeth/permanent teeth, there is an increase in the prevalence of dental caries, so that regular dental visiting behavior is needed. The Health Belief Model (HBM) explains and predicts health behavior by focusing on individual attitudes and beliefs. This study aims to determine the role of sociodemographics (gender, age, parental education, parental occupation, number of siblings, and distance to health facilities) as moderators of the influence on perceived susceptibility and perceived barriers to dental visiting behavior. The design of this study was quantitative cross-sectional with 289 children aged 11-14 years recruited through purposive sampling. A difference test was conducted to see the difference in dental visiting behavior in each sociodemographic category. Continued with Hayes Process SPSS version 26 to see the moderation effect. The results of the analysis showed that perceived susceptibility and perceived barriers contributed to dental visiting behavior. Female gender, more mature age, higher parental education, parental occupation as a doctor/lecturer/teacher, and fewer siblings, indicate higher dental visiting behavior. However, only parental occupation moderates the influence of perceived susceptibility on dental visiting behavior, where the strongest influence is found in children with TNI/Polri/PNS parents. All demographic variables do not moderate the influence of perceived barriers on dental visiting behavior. These results emphasize the importance of health beliefs that will determine the emergence of dental visiting behavior and how the role of demographic factors differentiates dental visiting behavior.
