Abstract

This study analyzes the role of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as China's security instrument against the threat of terrorism. RATS was formed to face the challenges of three major crimes, namely terrorism, separatism, and extremism, which have a significant impact on the stability of the Central Asia region and China's domestic, especially in Xinjiang. Using the Regional Security Complex Theory approach, this study explores China's effort to create regional stability through multilateral ollaboration and threat securitization. This study also reveals the dynamics of relations between SCO members in countering transnational security threats. The results show that RATS is an important tool for China to strengthen domestic control, maintain its international image, and enhance regional stability through security cooperation, This study contributes to regional security studies and international policies related to handling terrorism.
