Abstract
The surge in online gambling activities that has occurred recently has become quite a serious social issue. The reason is that, although it has been strictly prohibited by law, the number of online gambling activities continues to increase. This situation shows that the efforts made by the government are still not effective enough to eradicate this illegal activity. Considering the impact caused by online gambling activities, which give rise to serious new legal problems such as the emergence of criminal acts in the form of murder, theft, violence, and even suicide. Therefore, research titled "Online Gambling as a Criminogenic Factor in the Occurrence of Criminal Acts" needs to be conducted, with the aim of identifying the factors underlying online gambling as a cause of criminal acts and finding control strategies to address the increasing prevalence of online gambling to prevent criminal acts.
The research method used by the author in examining this paper is empirical legal research with a sociological approach. The analysis technique used in this research is qualitative. The results of the study indicate that there are several factors that cause online gambling to be a reason for someone to commit criminal acts, including the perpetrator having weak self-control, unstable economic conditions, social environment, and the presence of opportunities and chances that support someone in committing crimes. Next, there are several efforts that law enforcement agencies can undertake to prevent the proliferation of online gambling from triggering criminal activities, namely through three approaches: preemptive, preventive, and repressive measures. Based on the research results obtained by the author, it can be concluded that online gambling can be a contributing factor to someone committing criminal acts. To prevent the increasing prevalence of online gambling, law enforcement agencies must take more conceptual and comprehensive decisive steps to ensure the success of the established strategies, such as collaborating with various agencies or institutions to maximize the eradication of online gambling.
