Abstract

This research focused on one of the fundamental elements of pragmatics. Pragmatics was explored as a branch of linguistic studies that proved intriguing for further investigation. Among its various aspects, speech acts were a central focus. Speech acts are categorized into five types, one of which is directive speech acts. This study aimed to identify the types of directive speech acts used by Katniss that obtained responses from the interlocutor in the movie "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" and to determine which types of directive speech acts were most frequently used in the film. This study used qualitative methods to analyze the data. The data collection was conducted by reading the script, watching the film to analyze gestures, and examining Katniss' dialogue that elicited actions or responses from interlocutors. After the data collected, the result was analysed based on the speech act theory from Searle (1979). The analysis revealed three types of directive speech acts in the film: Request, Question, and Command. The results of this study showed that Command was the most dominant type of directive speech act used in the film, with a total of 9 utterances. This study was expected to provide useful insights into understanding directive speech acts and to enrich knowledge about the types included in directive speech acts.
