Abstract

Suicide ranks fourth as one of the causes of death in Indonesia. With 988 cases
recorded from January to September 20, 2024. This figure shows a significant increase,
especially in East Java, including Malang. This high number is a serious concern, especially
because of the many cases that occur among students. Students are vulnerable to stress so that
the level of depression in students is classified as severe which makes a positive correlation
with the emergence of suicidal ideation in students. The various pressures they experience can
have an impact on their self-concept and students with a negative self-concept will be more
likely to consider suicide as a solution to the problems they are facing. The purpose of this study
is to find out the relationship between suicidal ideation and self-concept in students in Malang.
This study uses a quantitative method with a correlation study design. Data collection is carried
out online with a google form. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling. The subjects
in this study are students at Malang universities who have thought or thought of suicide. The
instruments used were the suicidal ideation scale and the self-concept scale. Data analysis uses
a spearman rank correlation test. The results of the analysis test showed that there was a
relationship between suicidal ideation and self-concept, with a correlation coefficient of -0.679.
