Abstract

Adolescence is a transitional period when individuals often face emotional, social, and psychological pressures and changes. One of the problems that arise during adolescence is non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). One of the causes of the emergence of NSSI behavior in individuals is the release of negative emotions that can be caused by feelings of loneliness by individuals. So, this study aims to determine the relationship between loneliness and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents. The sample used in this study were adolescents aged 12-18 who were selected using a purposive sampling technique with a total of 118 respondents analyzed. The instruments used in the study were the Self-Harm Inventory (SHI) for non-suicidal self-injury variables and the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 for loneliness variables. The results of this study using Pearson's r correlation test analysis showed a significant positive relationship between loneliness and NSSI. This study has several important implications for adolescents, parents, teachers, and counselors. Adolescents need to build good interpersonal relationships to avoid feelings of loneliness and understand appropriate emotion regulation. Parents and teachers at school also play a role in providing social support and the counseling guidance at school is expected to provide education about managing emotions.
