Abstract

This research aims to explain how the Indonesian Government responds to the stigmatization carried out by the European Union through the Renewable Energy Directive II policy. There are quite a lot of studies discussing Indonesia's response to the implementation of the RED II policy by the European Union, however, there has been no study that uses the framework of stigma politics analysis in explaining Indonesia's efforts to deal with the stigmatization. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with analysis techniques using literature study methods from various sources such as official government announcements or news, books, journals, theses, working papers, electronic media, and other sources. The results of this study reveal that the European Union's RED II policy discriminates against Indonesia as a producer of palm oil. The Indonesian Government resisted the label imposed by making diplomatic efforts and filing a lawsuit with the WTO. The resistance carried out by the Indonesian Government is included in the strategy of managing stigma avoidance. This study provides an understanding of stigma management in the context of foreign policy and international relations, as well as communication strategies that can be carried out to overcome the impacts of international policies that are considered detrimental.
