Abstract

The use of social media among adolescents has a negative impact such as the emergence of problems and disruption of daily activities. Loneliness is thought to be one of the psychosocial factors that cause social media addiction in adolescents. Loneliness occurs when the expectations that individuals have do not match the reality that arises when establishing relationships with the surrounding environment. This study aims to determine the relationship between loneliness and social media addiction in adolescents. The research method used is a quantitative approach with data analysis using simple linear correlation. The instruments in this study used the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 scale from Russell, which has been adapted by Munte, and the SMAS-SF scale from Sahin, which has been adapted by Munte. The subjects in this study amounted to 170 adolescents. This subject was taken using a purposive sampling technique. The results showed that there is a positive significant relationship between loneliness and social media addiction in adolescents (r = 0.575; p < 0.000). This indicates that the more lonely a teenager is, the higher the level of social media addiction. This study implies that adolescents can do useful activities to manage their loneliness and pay attention to the duration of social media use.
