Abstract
Background: Adolescence is a transition period from childhood to adulthood marked by physical, mental, emotional and social development. During this period, adolescents seek their identity from being dependent on their parents to being independent. The search for self-identity is often turbulent and does not always run smoothly, so adolescents are easily influenced by their environment. One of them is playing online games that are popular among teenagers which cause addiction when played until they forget the time. Gaming addiction can lead to mental health problems such as depression, social anxiety, stress, suicidal thoughts and substance abuse. In addition, online game addiction can also cause a lack of concentration in learning. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between online game addiction and study motivation in Malang adolescents.
Methods: This study used quantitative method with correlational design. The population of this study was 270 8th grade students in Malang Junior High School. The sampling method was saturated sampling, and 159 respondents were obtained at Malang Junior High School in September. The questionnaire used in this study is a questionnaire of online game addiction and learning motivation. The variables in this study are online game addiction and learning motivation. Data analysis was performed using the Spearmen Rank test.
Results: Spearmen rank test results with a coefficient of -0.419 and a p-value of 0.000 < α, Ha is accepted, it is concluded that there is a significant relationship between online game addiction and learning motivation in junior high school students in Malang city in 2024.
Discussion: Online game addiction that occurs among adolescents can reduce student motivation to learn. Therefore, it is necessary to supervise and limit adolescents in playing gadgets to reduce the number of addicts.
