Abstract

This research aims to analyze the influence of the Problem-Based Learning learning model with an open-ended approach on students' critical thinking skills and communication skills in science subjects at MTs Negeri 2 Lembata. The research uses quantitative methods with a quasi-experimental design involving an experimental class and a control class. The instruments used include critical thinking skills tests and communication skills observation sheets. The research results show that the PBL model with an open-ended approach has a significant influence on improving students' critical thinking and communication skills. The average posttest score of students in the experimental class showed a significant increase compared to the control class. The open-ended approach gives students the freedom to explore various solutions to problems, which not only improves understanding of concepts but also trains their ability to convey ideas in a logical and structured manner. This research concludes that the PBL model with an open-ended approach is an effective learning strategy for improving 21st century skills, especially critical thinking and communication. Further research is recommended to examine the application of this method to other subjects and explore the integration of technology as a learning support medium.
