Abstract
Idioms are one of the special features of the English language because they have special meanings that cannot be translated literally. Idioms commonly used in English literature include movies, songs, and TV shows or we can find them in daily conversation. This research was conducted to analyze the types of idiomatic expressions and to explain the contextual meaning of idiomatic expressions found in the “Wonka” movie. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method with document analysis. In collecting data, the researcher used movies because the data were taken from idiomatic expressions found in dialogues from the “Wonka” movie. The researcher classified the type of idiomatic expression using McCarthy and O’Dell’s theory and explained the contextual meaning with several dictionaries of idioms. The result shows 57 data of idiomatic expressions found in the movie. From seven types of idiomatic expressions, only six were found in the “Wonka” movie. The six types of idiomatic expressions found were fixed statements (41), similes (6), cliché (5), binomials (2), proverbs (2), and euphemisms (1). The researcher did not find the type of other language idiom. Then, there were found 57 data contextual meanings of idiomatic expressions.
