Abstract

Gender bias remains a significant issue in the educational environment in Indonesia. The unequal roles of men and women continue to be found in student textbooks. Despite the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, gender bias still appears through illustrated images and narrative texts. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on the analysis of forms of gender bias and representation. The qualitative descriptive approach is used to provide a comprehensive description and interpretation of the research object in its current state. Research data were collected through documentation techniques, including written and visual content. This study aims to uncover and describe the forms of gender bias in the Merdeka Curriculum Grade 1 Student Textbook published by Quadra. Using the nurture theory perspective, this research highlights that gender bias is a result of social constructs. The findings reveal that, despite being authored by female writers, the textbook still reproduces gender inequality. Gender bias is categorized into three main aspects: (1) Work roles, which distinguish between public and domestic roles; (2) Characteristics, which reflect differences in masculine and feminine traits, including clothing styles; and (3) Preferences, which encompass differences in interests and hobbies. This representation is evident in role distribution, where men are more dominant in active roles and leadership, while women are often limited to domestic and passive roles.
