Abstract
Background: The need for oxygenation is included in physiological needs, which is an important factor for human health. Disturbances in the respiratory system can cause a decrease in oxygen supply, which has an impact on the function of vital organs. One of these disorders is pleural effusion, which is an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space that surrounds the lungs. If physiological needs are not met, a person's activities will be disrupted. Therefore, Virginia Henderson created a model of help called "Activity of Living", which explains that the nurse's task is to help individuals as quickly as possible become more independent.

After the patient was given therapy according to the diagnosis and support in carrying out treatment independently, the results showed that the patient experienced an improvement in the diagnosis of death and self-dependence or a Barthel index of 80.
