Abstract
Until recently, many students were not interested in learning 'maths'. Learners' formal thinking level is still not optimal and their problem-solving skills are still weak. This study aims to describe the metacognition of students with divergent and convergent thinking types in solving mathematics problems. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Batu in the academic year 2022/2023 odd semester. This research uses a
qualitative descriptive type and approach. Data were taken from a questionnaire of students' thinking tendencies, tests with SPLDV material and interviews. Questionnaires are used to classify students' thinking tendencies which are more directed towards divergent or convergent thinking tendencies. The purpose of the
test is to determine the metacognition ability of students in solving mathematical problems on the material of the system of linear equations of two variables. This interview was conducted to collect data or information about, students' metacognition abilities, students' mathematical problem solving abilities, and how students use their metacognition in solving mathematical problems. The results of this study indicate that the metacognitive abilities of students in solving problems in convergent thinking types focus more on the planning stage in working on test questions, it is different from students who have divergent thinking abilities where they ignore the stage of understanding the problem, they will focus more on the monitoring stage, namely to find the answer to the problem given.
