Abstract

Using John Fiske's semiotics, this research focuses on examining the representation of mental disorders in the movie “Sleep Call”. This research is a qualitative research with descriptive research type. Where the data from the research is analyzed using John Fiske's semiotic analysis of the level of signs, namely the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. The purpose of this research is to find out how the representation of mental disorders through signs in the scenes and scenes contained in the movie Sleep Call. At the level of reality, crying, screaming, unstable breathing, are often used when a character is experiencing mental health problems. Unnatural character gestures with expressions of excessive appreciation and sadness, self-blame, and depression experienced. In clothing, someone who is depressed and mentally ill tends to dress untidy, shabby, and messy due to behaviors such as tugging, wringing clothes and so on. At the level of representation, electronic codes include shooting (type of shot and angle) and color tones that are used to reinforce the reality of the characters who experience mental health disorders. Shooting is used to actualize characters and locations or settings. In the color code, the color used is purple, because the use of bluish purple with a lot of intensity will create a depressive mood. At the level of ideology, the social elements and codes used in this film are the ideology of power hierarchy where the character experiences pressure, threats, and intimidation from the owner of power which triggers mental health disorders.
