Abstract

Communication between teachers and students is the key to transferring knowledge
and building effective relationships in the classroom. One commonly used form of
communication is imperative speech, which provides directions or instructions.
This study aims to analyze the forms, meanings, and students' responses to the
imperative speech teachers use in the learning process at SD Muhammadiyah 8 "KH
Mas Mansur" Malang. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method. Data
collection techniques included observation, note-taking, and documentation. Data
analysis involved three main stages: data reduction, data presentation, and
conclusion drawing. The study identified five forms of teachers' imperative speech:
(1) standard imperatives, (2) request imperatives, (3) permission imperatives, (4)
invitation imperatives, and (5) directive imperatives. Additionally, ten pragmatic
meanings of teachers' imperative speech were revealed: (1) pragmatic imperative
meanings of commands, (2) directives, (3) requests, (4) urgencies, (5) invitations,
(6) requests for permission, (7) granting permission, (8) prohibitions, (9)
congratulations, and (10) recommendations. And students' responses to various
forms of imperative speech vary, depending on the clarity of the instructions and
the relevance of the command to the learning situation in the classroom.
