Abstract

The advancement of communication technology is accelerating, but it is in stark contrast with the communication ethics of today's youth, whose language tends to be harsh and less polite when interacting with older people. This research aims to describe the function of response speech acts and the forms of ethics in the WhatsApp group of SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Lamongan. Using a descriptive approach, with a qualitative design. The data consists of words or phrases, sentences found in WhatsApp chats, with the source being screenshots from WhatsApp groups during August-December 2023. The techniques used are documentation and note-taking. Data analysis uses data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study were obtained through a Pragmatic analysis, Directive Function of 20 WhatsApp group data, namely Group, Alumni, IPM, FUTSAL, PERJUSA, Indonesian Language subject groups XI, XII, based on the Directive speech act function with 19 data, Assertive with 7 data, Expressive with 9 data, Commissive with 4 data. Meanwhile, the Ethical study from 20 data obtained those that conform to the politeness principles Formality had 11 data, while those that violated the formality principle had 4 data. The principle of politeness and camaraderie has 3 data points, and the principle of indecisiveness has 6 data points, with 1 data point violating indecisiveness. Therefore, the Group Response Etiquette between students and teachers, as well as between students at SMA Muhammadiyah 4 Lamongan, needs to be improved.
