Abstract

Background: Propionibacterium acnes were the microorganism which caused the acnes being made worry for adults. Treatment with using antibiotic can caused resistance, so it needed an alternative solution with exploitation the active substance from plant that was Eleutherine palmifolia L.
Objective: the aim of this study is to know the antibacterial activity of ethanol fraction of Eleutherine palmifolia L. toward Propionibacterium acnes. To obtained diameter inhibition zone of Eleutherine palmifolia L. ethyl acetate fraction againts Propionibacterium acnes growths, find out any kind af substance which contained in the Eleutherine palmifolia L. ethyl acetate fraction.
Method: to find out an antibacterial activity test using disc difussion methods Eleutherine palmifolia L. tuber ethyl acetate fraction with maceration level methods, then secondary metabolites identified with KLT methods and doing a test of bacterial activity with disc diffusion methods. The concentration of solvent test in 20 mg/ml, 40 mg/ml, and 60 mg/ml. Negative control is DMSO 1% and aquadest sterilization, while positive control is clyndamicin 2 μg/disc. Bacteria suspension swiped on solidify jelly as the media. Solvent test, negative controls and positive control put on solidify media, then incubates on 37o for 24 hours.
Result and Conclusion: the result of secondary metabolites identification, ethyl acetate fraction of Eleutherine palmifolia L. contains alkaloid, terpenoid, flavonoid, polifenol and antrakinon. The result of antibacterial activity testing of ethyl acetate fraction on Eleutherine palmifolia L. tubers to Propionibacterium acnes with 20 mg/ml(1,4mg/disk) concentration has inhibition zone 15,93 mm, 40 mg/ml(2,8 mg/disk) concentration has inhibition zone 18,36 mm, 60 mg/ml(4,2 mg/disk) concentration has inhibition zone 23,36 mm. Eventually, it can be concluded that ethyl acetate fraction or Eleutherine palmifolia L. tubers has an activity as antibacterial.
