Abstract
This research aims to identify the obstacles or challenges faced by students in transforming graphic representations into symbolic representations in two-variable linear equation systems and to analyze changes in students' thinking patterns and understanding after implementing transformative designs in two-variable linear equation systems. As an effort to change students' thinking patterns and understanding and facilitate students in understanding mathematical concepts more thoroughly and being able to relate them to real world situations. This type of research is qualitative with a transformative design approach. The subjects used in this research were class VIII MTs students. Muhammadiyah Lempangang. Data collection techniques in this research include tests, observation and documentation. The test is given to determine students' knowledge in understanding graphic representation material to symbolic representations of systems of linear equations with two variables. The research results show that in general all subjects (T1, T2, S1, S2, R1, R2) were able to fulfill the indicators of unpacking the source and preliminary coordination. Research shows that students in the sedan and low categories experience problems with the construction the target and determining equivalence indicators, which causes them to be unable to complete the transformation of graphic representations into symbolic representations. Students in the medium ability category experienced problems in constructing the target and determining equivalence due to micro-concept errors, as well as those in the low ability group had difficulty in constructing a two-variable linear equation system due to a lack of effective strategies and basic errors in calculations.
