Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the differences in critical thinking skills of students taught using inquiry-based learning methods compared to traditional learning methods in the subject of volume of three-dimensional shapes, specifically rectangular prisms, cylinders, and cones. The subjects of the study consisted of two classes, namely the experimental class (5D) which utilized inquiry learning and the control class (5B) which implemented traditional learning. Before and after the learning process, students were given pre-tests and post-tests to measure their understanding of the material taught.
The analysis results showed that the average post-test score of class 5D reached 79.22, which is higher than the average post-test score of class 5B, which was only 70.88. Statistical analysis using SPSS indicated that this difference is significant, with a p-value < 0.05. Additionally, interviews with students revealed that students in class 5D were more active in asking questions, analyzing problems, and seeking solutions independently. They demonstrated better critical thinking skills by relating the concepts learned to real-life situations.
In contrast, students in class 5B tended to be passive and more focused on memorizing formulas without deeply understanding the concepts. Inquiry-based learning proved to be effective in enhancing student engagement, motivation, and deeper conceptual understanding. The results of this study indicate that inquiry learning methods not only improve students' learning outcomes but also train them to become more active and independent learners. The implications of this research emphasize the importance of implementing more active and student-centered learning methods to improve the quality of education. By involving students in the discovery process, they not only acquire knowledge but also develop critical thinking skills necessary to face the challenges of the 21st century. This research provides a significant contribution to the development of innovative and effective learning methods in the context of mathematics education.
