Abstract
Malang is one of the major cities in East Java which is also a city of education. The large number of immigrant students makes the socio-cultural conditions of this city heterogeneous. The focus of the subject in this study is the original Sundanese ethnic students from West Java who migrated to Malang. Sundanese students are required to adapt effectively in a new cultural environment. So that identity negotiation is needed for the needs of self-adjustment, acceptance, and minimizing conflict or tension. The purpose of this research is mainly to find out how the process stages, forms, and final results of Sundanese students' identity negotiations at the University in Malang. The main theory used is the theory of identity negotiation by Stella Ting Toomey with qualitative-descriptive methods and data collection through interview techniques. The negotiation process through the identification of culture shock to determine the main factors and obstacles, followed by the initial attitude and acceptance of local students, efforts to flexibility and socio-cultural integration, conflicts and tensions experienced, changes in attitudes and behavior, and efforts to maintain the original cultural identity. As a result, the Sundanese students' identity negotiation process took place positively. The forms of Sundanese students' identity negotiation are acculturation and identity affirmation, while the final results include conscious intercultural communication, feeling more accepted, appreciated, and respected.
