Abstract

Gambling disorder is a compulsive behavior characterized by an individual's inability to control the urge to gamble, despite being aware of the significant negative impacts on their personal, social, and financial life. This addictive behavior is often accompanied by a sense of incapacity to stop gambling, and further given incentive by the availability of online gambling which affects mental health and overall well-being. This study aims to find out the effectiveness of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) in reducing symptoms of gambling disorder. This research employs a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group approach. Data collection techniques include clinical interviews and self-reports using the Gambling Symptom Assessment Scale (G-SAS). The study subjects consist of 10 individuals who meet the inclusion criteria, namely: aged 21-30 years, exhibiting significant gambling disorder symptoms both physically and emotionally, and having a history of addiction lasting 6 months or more based on clinical assessment. The results of the study showed that the SFBT intervention was significantly successful in reducing gambling disorder symptoms in the intervention group compared to the control group. The mean G-SAS score in the intervention group decreased significantly after the SFBT session. The results of the Wilcoxon test calculation from the experimental group showed a Z value of -2.032 with a significance value of 0.042 or p < 0.05. The mean score for the severity of gambling disorder decreased from 30.4 to 25.2. In the control group, the calculation results showed a Z value of -1.29 with a significance value of 0.0197 or p < 0.05. The mean score for the severity of gambling disorder experienced a slight increase from 29.2 to 30.2. These results indicate that SFBT has proven effective in reducing gambling disorder.
