Abstract
This research aims to describe the Communication Accommodation Process for Students from Outside the City of Malang Class of 2023 at the Muhammadiyah University of Malang. Using a qualitative approach, the type of research is descriptive with the method used is phenomenology. Data was collected using indepth interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Eight research subjects were determined purposively. The research results show that communication accommodation for students from outside Malang City goes through a process (stages) of convergence, divergence, and excessive accommodation. Students learn to adapt to local culture and communication in order to maintain aspects of their cultural identity. Language, customs and social norms also influence their adaptation process. The friendliness of the residents, cultural festivals, and the cool climate in Malang City play a role in the communication accommodation process for migrant students. Even though they initially experienced difficulties when communicating with friends from different regions, all subjects have started to occasionally use Malang language with dialect and verbal and non-verbal. During the communication accommodation process, students experienced various challenges and adjustments while in Malang. The main difficulty faced is the
difference in language, especially Javanese which is often confusing for those who cannot speak Javanese and requires extra effort to understand it. Overall, their experiences illustrate that although adjustment took time and effort, they managed to find comfort and happiness in Malang with their openness and willingness to learn.
