Abstract
Background Vitamin E is a group of compounds consisting of tocopherol and tocotrienol. A lotion is a liquid emulsion consisting of an oil phase and a water phase stabilized by an emulgator, containing one or more active ingredients in it. The liquid consistency allows for quick and even use on the surface of the skin. Preservatives are ingredients used to inhibit the growth of microorganisms. Preservatives aim to prevent their growth, or to react and destroy microorganisms that could damage the product or grow on the product.
Objective This study aims to obtain data on preservatives used in vitamin E body lotion products circulating in Indonesia and preservatives most widely used in vitamin E body lotion products circulating in Indonesia.
Methods Conducted product review study research with simple quantitative analysis methods. Then tested validity and reability test using SPSS.
Result and Conclusions Preservatives that are widely used in vitamin E body lotion products circulating in Indonesia are phenoxyethanol, metyl paraben, propyl paraben, butyl paraben, DMDM hyndantoin, ethylexylgliceryn, ethyl paraben, diazolidinyl urea, butylated hydroxitoluene, benzyl alcohol, isobutyl paraben. The most widely used preservative in vitamin E body lotion products circulating in Indonesia is Phenoxyethanol as many as 28 products (66.67%) used singly and in combination.
