Abstract

In today's digital era, easy access to information on social media can make individuals with high levels of neuroticism tend to respond with negative emotions making it difficult to control social media behavior. As a result, they are more at risk of experiencing the fear that others are doing activities that are more enjoyable and valuable and bring up feelings of missing out on opportunities to participate. This condition is commonly referred to as Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). The purpose of this study is to examine whether there is a relationship between one of the big five personality dimensions, namely neuroticism and fear of missing out. This research design is a quantitative non-experimental correlational type with research respondents as many as 246 emerging adulthood individuals aged 18-25 years and are active users of social media. The scale used in the neuroticism variable is the Big Five Inventory (BFI) scale, then FoMO uses the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOS). The data analysis method of this study uses the Pearson product moment correlation analysis test with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.217 with a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), meaning that this study shows a positive relationship between neuroticism and FoMO which is significant. The higher the level of neuroticism , the higher the FoMO, and vice versa.
