Abstract
Background: Lemongrass essential oil contains citronellal (17,31%) which acts as an antibacterial agent. This oil combined with cocamidopropyl betaine surfactant has very low eye and skin irritation potential in animal safety tests and is an amphoteric surfactant with good foaming properties and can also affect the physicochemical characteristics of soap preparations.
Objective: To determine the effect of cocamidopropyl betaine levels (5%, 7% and 9%) on the physicochemical characteristics of citronella essential oil liquid bath soap including organoleptics, pH, viscosity, specific gravity, foam stability and to determine antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.
Method:Cocamidopropyl betaine is formulated in 3 different formulas, namely F1 (5%), F2 (7%), F3 (9) followed by a well diffusion method antibacterial activity test against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
Results and Conclusions: Liquid bath soap with 1% citronella essential oil content has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Organoleptic tests of Formula 1 (5%), Formula 2 (7%), Formula 3 (9%) showed a slightly yellowish white color, a distinctive odor and a homogeneous liquid. From the results of the One-way Anova analysis, significant differences were found in viscosity, pH, foam stability, specific gravity and antibacterial activity. It was found that formula 2 (7%) was the optimal formula.
