Abstract

This research discusses the shift in the social meaning of Islamic boarding schools in the eyes of santri parents, with a focus on three Islamic boarding school institutions, namely An-Nur Islamic Boarding School, Ar-Rifaie Modern Islamic Boarding School, and Al Izzah IIBS Batu. This shift was analyzed using the theory of Symbolic Interactionism developed by Herbert Blumer, which emphasizes the importance of social interaction and symbolic meaning created through social relationships. This research uses qualitative methods with a social definition paradigm and a phenomenological approach to understand how santri parentss form, maintain and change their social meaning of Islamic boarding school in the social life and education of their children. Data was collected through in-depth interview techniques with Islamic boarding school parents, which provided a direct description of their experiences and perspectives on Islamic boarding school institutions. The results of this research show that there is a shift in the social meaning of Islamic boarding school that is owned by the santri parents: (1) From what was originally Islamic boarding school as a place of religious education only, it became a place for both religious and formal education, (2) Islamic boarding school as a place for traditional education became a place for modern education. , and a new meaning was found, namely Islamic boarding schools as a place to prevent children from promiscuity. This shift is influenced by social and cultural changes in society, as well as the need of santri parents for a more holistic education for their children. Apart from that, symbolic interactions between student parents, teachers and students also form new meanings that are more flexible and contextual according to the demands of the times. It is hoped that these findings will provide new insight into the dynamics of change in traditional educational institutions such as Islamic boarding schools, as well as the implications for social structure and education in Indonesia.
