Abstract

Social anxiety and smartphone addiction are closely related, especially in Indonesian late adolescents. Adolescents often use smartphones to avoid social challenges, seeking comfort and support during identity formation. This study aims to determine whether there is a positive relationship between social anxiety and smartphone addiction in late adolescence. This study uses a quantitative method with a correlational approach. The sampling method applied in this study is non-probability sampling using a purposive sampling technique, with 280 respondents. It was carried out online in a Google form and offline at MA Hidayatul Mubtadi'in class 12 and SMA Surya Buana class 12 in Malang City. The measuring instruments used in this study were the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A) and the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS). The results of this study indicate that there is a positive relationship between social anxiety and the smartphone addiction variable. This means that the higher the level of social anxiety, the higher the level of smartphone addiction in late adolescents in Malang City, and vice versa. With a correlation coefficient of 0.405 and has a significance value of <0.05.
