Abstract
ABSTRACT
Bachrul Ilmi Karima 2024, 201910030311005. SOCIAL ADAPTATION OF MIGRANT STUDENTS WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES
(A Study on Students from Tanah Bumbu, South Kalimantan, in Malang City)
This research aims to understand how migrant students from Tanah Bumbu, South Kalimantan, adapt to the local community in Malang City. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, with purposive sampling as the method for selecting research subjects. Data collection techniques used in this study include 1. Observation, 2. Interviews, and 3. Documentation. The results of this research indicate that migrant students initially face difficulties in adjusting to the new environment in Malang, particularly due to differences in culture, language, and daily habits compared to their place of origin. Additionally, these students face challenges related to the different weather conditions and managing finances independently. However, over time, migrant students begin to adapt through their experiences, supported by fellow migrant students or peers from the same region. Social interactions between the local community and the migrant students are generally positive. The adaptation process for migrant students, especially those from Tanah Bumbu, involves various activities such as greeting local residents, participating in community events like communal work or mutual aid, joining carnivals, and celebrating major holidays. Through these processes, students from Tanah Bumbu not only gain an understanding of the local culture but also build strong social networks and adhere to the norms set by the local community. However, obstacles such as culture shock, differences in culture and language, homesickness, and economic challenges can slow down the adaptation process, particularly for students from Tanah Bumbu. If they do not adapt quickly, students may experience anxiety, overthinking, and deep homesickness.
