Abstract
Background : Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures
as well as cognitive, psychological, and social consequences. This neurological
disorder occurs when nerve cells fail to communicate properly, resulting in seizures
that can cause progressive damage on neurons. Valproic acid is one of the first-line
antiepileptics to control epileptic seizures that most widely prescribed in the treatment
of generalized and focal epilepsy because it has relatively few side effects.
Objective : The research purpose was to determine the pattern of the use of valproic
acid on epilepsy patients including dosage form, dose, route, frequency, and outcome
of treatment at the Regional General Hospital of R.T. Notopuro Sidoarjo.
Method : The research was conducted by observasional research method with a
descriptive nature and retrospective data collection on the health medical record of
epilepsy patients who underwent outpatient care in the period January – December
2023
Result and conclusion : Based on the research observation, it was showed that 60
patients with inclusion criteria were using valproic acid therapy. The most common
single therapy used was valproic acid syrup (2x250 mg) po (this therapy was used by
13 patients (30%)), The most common two combination therapy used was valproic acid
(1x500 mg) po + phenytoin (2x100 mg) po (this therapy was used by 3 patients (12%)),
the most common three combination therapy used was valproic acid (2x500 mg) po +
phenytoin (3x100 mg) po + clobazam 10 mg (1x10 mg) po (this therapy was used by
3 patiens 19%)). The are 4 patterns of switch treatmens.
