Abstract
Background: Aloe Vera (Aloe vera L.), a type of natural plant which functions as an antioxidant, wound healer and skin moisturizer. So Aloe Vera is the choice as an active ingredient to be made as a moisturizer emulgel preparation. In order to increase the efficacy of Aloe Vera on the skin, ingredients are added with Caffeine and Vitamin E as additional natural substances. Then an irritation test was carried.
Objective: To test the irritation reaction to the Moisturizer Emulgel Aloe Vera, Caffeine and Vitamin E preparation using the Draize Test method.
Method: A moisturizer emulgel base formulation and a moisturizer formulation with active ingredients were made in 3 replications. In glycerin concentration 20% and carbomer concentration 2%. An irritation test was carried out using the Draize Test method.
Results and conclusions: The results of the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) 5% test which was used as a positive control caused the draize test to experience irritation. Calculated using a formula, the irritant score was 3.72, indicating a moderate/moderate irritation reaction. The distilled water used as a negative control did not experience any changes. In the glycerin formulation with a concentration of 20% and the carbomer formulation with a concentration of 2%, the Draize Test did not show any changes or irritation reactions. It was concluded that the moisturizer emulgel Aloe Vera, Caffein and Vitamin E with 20% Glycerin and 2% Carbomer did not cause irritation in the Draize Test.
