Abstract

The Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party in Germany experienced defeat in the previous election. Following this, the AfD returned, leveraging Islamophobic sentiments to strengthen their political position in the country. By adopting anti-Islam rhetoric, they focused their narrative on the perceived threat posed by Muslim immigration to Germany's Christian identity and culture, emphasizing the significant differences between Islam and Christianity. The AfD then won elections in a German federal state. This study uses a qualitative methodology, employing literature reviews from various journal articles, books, and news sources. The research reveals that the AfD employed strategies in the social, political, and security spheres, using provocative communication tactics to highlight fears surrounding Muslim immigration to Germany. The AfD further spread Islamophobic messages widely through social media, posters displayed in public spaces, and speeches. These strategies successfully captured the attention of social groups worried about the increasing influence of Islam in Germany, particularly those who felt marginalized by government policies. The study concludes that the AfD’s strategy of using Islamophobia as a political tool proved effective in increasing their support after their previous electoral defeat, although the approach had negative consequences for Germany’s social environment. It damaged social harmony and deepened divisions within society.
