Abstract

This research chronicles Finland's decision to join NATO in 2023, focusing on threats from Russia as well as the increased security offered by the ally. This research will use alliance theory from Stephen M. Walt, regarding his book "The Origins Of Alliances". The research will analyze the threat felt by the Finnish State after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which was the threat of Russia's offensive capability and intensity which was the main factor behind Finland's decision to join. The results of this research show that Russia's large capabilities and its history of military aggression have strengthened threat perceptions for Finland. Finland's joining as a member of NATO is considered a strategic step to improve national security and strengthen Finland's regional geopolitical position. This research uses document analysis methods and case studies using data from secondary sources. In conclusion, joining NATO for Finland is an important step in protecting the country's territorial integrity from threats from Russia
