Abstract

The application of Bruner's Theory has three stages, namely (1) Enactive is that students are directly seen to be active (action-based representation), (2) Iconic is an activity carried out by students related to images of objects (image-based representation), (3) Symbolic is a presentation stage based on an abstract and more flexible thinking system (application-based representation). Bruner's theory reveals that in the learning process children should be given the opportunity to manipulate objects or props that are specially designed and can be tinkered with by students in understanding a mathematical concept. This study aims to describe a phenomenon or mathematics learning activity that occurs in the classroom by using the application of Bruner's Theory in the material of the multiplication system in algebra. This type of research is qualitative analysis research. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII-A at SMP Negeri 1 Sapeken. Data collection techniques in this study using the results of questionnaires and interviews. The research steps are to use class action to measure student activeness in learning. The interview session was conducted outside of class hours. It can be concluded that through the application of Bruner's learning theory with enactive, iconic and symbolic stages, it can motivate students in understanding the concept of the multiplication system of class VII-A students at SMP Negeri 1 Sapeken, Sapeken, Sumenep.
